Weekly Update 10.22.18

Wow! What a performance by the Westfield Big Red Band and Color Guard! All three judges at the Region 33 UIL Marching Contest awarded the group 1st division SUPERIOR ratings!

The band has worked so hard this year and our next step is to compete at the Area F marching contest this coming weekend at the Galena Park ISD athletic facility again. We are in “detail mode” this week and myself and the staff believe it the best use of the students’ time to make a slight change to our color guard rehearsal schedule for Monday. The guard will have their own separate rehearsal earlier in the afternoon in order to facilitate their time is best dedicated to them and the winds and percussion will practice at the originally scheduled time with our clinician, Mr. Mcadow. Mr. Harrington has contacted color guard members regarding the change.

Here is the schedule for the upcoming week:

This is our state-qualifying contest. The bands who have received first divisions at their respective region marching band contests will be competing on Saturday to advance to the UIL State Marching Band contest on Saturday. Because not all regions have completed their region marching contests, we will not have a solidified itinerary for Saturday until those regions have reported in. Rest assured, the moment we have the detailed itinerary concerning Saturday, it will be released. As a preliminary “guesstimate,” the itinerary for the morning should be similar to this previous Saturday with the added possibility of performing as a finalist band that evening. Please be on the lookout for this itinerary as soon as we have obtained it from our UIL leadership. Congratulations to all the students for being recognized as one of the top bands in our region and being selected to be evaluated at the larger Area level.

For Monday, students are to write a MINIMUM of 12 complete sentences describing what part the idea of competition plays in the marching band experience of all students. There are not “right or wrong” answers to this but each student should convey their interpretation of how important competitive results are to them as they relate them to their overall experience participating in the marching band activity. The short essay should be titled “The role of competition results when participating in marching band.”

All parents and supporters are invited to come to Westfield’s practice field to watch our students perform their final rehearsal “run through” before UIL Area F Marching Contest. The students have worked incredibly hard this year and simply having parents come to watch them finish their rehearsal can really ELEVATE their performance to the MAX! We look forward to seeing you there!
